Henna Goudzand and I will be interviewing each other, with Henna focusing on her book SUIKERLAND (which means ‘sugar land’), published by Zwijsen:

The African girl Esi, her brother and their slave Lano are kidnapped by two men in the village and taken to the coast, where a slave ship is waiting. The children are locked up in the hold of the ship and end up on a sugar plantation on the other side of the ocean. When there, Esi has to share a broom hutch with Jantje, son of an Amsterdam supervisor and a black woman. When Esi learns secrets about Jantje that turn his life upside down, they have no choice but to come up with an escape plan.

Suikerland avoids all clichés and wants to tell children how people lived in slavery. Both the African and European histories of slavery are part of the story.
