REMEMBER TO VIEW PEOPLE AS PEOPLE – Opening exhibition ALA SMA TORI: Maartje Jaquet in conversation with Clayde Menso about Keti Koti, Thursday, June 27th at 8 PM.
“In the run-up to Keti Koti, bookshop Over Het Water in Amsterdam Noord (North) organizes an exhibition in their store with portraits made by artist Maartje Jaquet. Ala Sma Tori means ‘stories of everyone’. Maartje has portrayed almost eighty people over the past few years. She asked thirty of them what Keti Koti means to them and how they commemorate and celebrate it. These portraits, made with pen and watercolor, and the accompanying stories have been put together in the book Ala Sma Tori.
One of the people portrayed is Clayde Menso. He was born and raised in Amsterdam, grew up in Oud-West (Old-West) and Zuidoost (South East) and now lives in Noord (North) . He was the head of various cultural organizations in the city and currently is the CEO of ITA, International Theater Amsterdam. Maartje and Clayde talk about his experience of Keti Koti, as a child and as a father, about joint commemoration and celebration, about solidarity and about one of his favorites: Madame Jeannette.”
