Bethel Spiritual Baptist Church, Brooklyn

These are the eight portraits of the people I met in Dean Street Brooklyn (NY), in front of and inside Bethel Spiritual Baptist Church. These most friendly people invited me in after I made some comments about their beautiful outfits, their beauty in general. Inside the church I noticed similarities with what I had seen before at WInti (an Afro Surinamese religion) gatherings and Vodou rituals from Haiti. Below I will add some photos I made inside the church. When I asked about this I was told that in this church a combination of Baptist and indeed African spiritual faith, with ancestor worship, was practised.

It was an unforgettable meeting, and now I have these portraits as a beautiful memory. Back in my studio in Den Ilp, I scanned the drawings / watercolors to A3 size (the originals are A4) and emailed them to the priest (first drawing) so that people can have them printed for themselves.
