Mama Aisa – Mother Earth: collaborative paintings with Rinaldo Klas

On Saturday Febrary 8th, Surinamese artist Rinaldo Klas and I jointly created two paintings in a performance in Readytex Art Gallery, Paramaribo, Suriname.
The large work, Mama Aisa *), will remain there, and will be part of an exhibition curated by Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi, during the months of May and June.
The smaller painting, For the Love of Mother Earth, will be on display during the Surinamese Months (June 25th – August 22nd) in the Amstelkerk, Amsterdam, in the annual (sales) exhibition for Stadsherstel Suriname, curated by Myra WInter.

Mama Aisa *) – 110x100cm, acrylic paint on canvas. By Maartje Jaquet and Rinaldo Klas, 2025.

For the Love of Mother Earth – 55x50cm, acrylic paint on canvas. By Maartje Jaquet and Rinaldo Klas, 2025.

*) Mama Aisa, in the Afro-Surinamese religion of Winti, is the primal mother, the mother of mothers, the mother of fathers, mother of us all. Mama Aisa is mother earth, the goddess of life and death. She is also the patroness of the arts, medicine & trade. Mama Aisa stands for inclusivity. Unconditional love, compassion & wisdom are her qualities. As head of the earth gods, Mama Aisa is the most important goddess in the Winti god realm.
In ancient Egypt ruled the mother goddess Isis. In West Africa she was called Asase Yaa. During slavery the goddess traveled with the enslaved Africans from West Africa to Suriname, where she was affectionately called Mama Aisa or Mamaisa on the plantations. With the migration of many Afro-Surinamese, Winti religion is also practised in The Netherlands.

      Brasa!
