Surinaamse Maanden 2026

Surinamese months, from June 3 to July 31, 2026, seventh edition.
Stadsherstel Amsterdam organizes an art exhibition (free entrance) in the Amstelkerk, curated by Myra Winter and Nellie Bakboord, as well as lectures, concerts, workshops, concerts and more. All profits go to the preservation of Surinamese heritage. See the full program here (in Dutch).

For the occasion, special art objects, postcards, books and more items are sold in the little Stadsherstel shop across the street. In this shop (corner of Reguliersgracht/Kerkstraat), you will find works by me:
– ceramic jewelry and art objects, an ode to Mama Aisa (Mother Earth)
– postcards of portraits I drew/painted in Suriname
– small paintings of details of the ‘Bigi Spikri’ *)
– my book ‘Ala Sma Tori – Keti Koti Verbeeld’, featuring portraits of people commemorating and celebrating Keti Koti **) in Amsterdam and other places, and interviews about how they experience this in their own way
The last copy of my book was sold today; tomorrow I will bring a new stack!

*) The Bigi Spikri is a festive and colourful parade that commemorates and celebrates the abolition of slavery. ‘Bigi Spikri’ is a Surinamese expression meaning “big mirror”. It refers to a tradition in Paramaribo, where people dressed in festive attire would parade past shop windows, admiring their reflection in the glass. That tradition of groups dressed in traditional clothing continues in the Netherlands, with an annual parade in Amsterdam leading up to the programme in the Oosterpark.
**) On July first, it’s Keti Koti: the annual commemoration and celebration of the abolition of slavery by the Dutch, in the Caribbean (Suriname and the Antilles). Keti Koti means broken chains.
